The 1.9 Km Swim Takes Place In The Majestic River Shannon. The Swim Starts At The Beautiful Number 1 Nature Reserve On The West Side Of Athlone. Athletes Will Start With A 150m Up Stream Swim, With 2 Left Hand 90 Degree Turns, And This Is Followed By 1700m Down Current Swim, Passing Under The White Railway Bridge And Heading Towards The Main Town Bridge And Into The Tourism And Picturesque Region Of The West Of Athlone. Athletes Then Swim By The Foot Of Athlone Town Castle, And The World Famous Seans Bar, The Oldest Pub In Europe. It Is At This Point Of The Swim That The River Banks , Town Bridge And The Castle Create A Natural Amphitheatre For Spectators And The Atmosphere Is Amazing! Athletes Then Pass The The Picturesque Weir Wall And Exit The Swim At The Beautiful Tree Lined Burgess Park.
The Bike Is A One Lap 90km Loop Known Locally As ‘The Tour Of The Lakes’ With 418m Of Climbing. The Bike Is Relatively Flat With Good Roads And Will Lead To Good Fast Bike Times. The First 5km Is Technical As You Leave The Town Of Athlone. Athletes Then Pass Through The Picturesque Towns Of Glasson, Ballymahon And Over The Grand Canal. The cyclists then pass through Lanesborogh And Over The River Shannon. A Left Turn In Roscommon Takes the athletes into The Final 35km On The Fastest Part Of The Course With Excellent Surfaces And Tail Winds. Athletes Will Then Pass Through The Beautiful Country Towns Of Knockcroghery And Lecarrow. Where Some Athletes Have Been Known To Stop In Coffeys Bar For A Well Deserved Pint! As Athletes Re Enter Athlone The Athletes Will Pass By The Army Barracks And Athlone Town Castle Where You Will Meet Athletes On The Run Course.The Crowds At This Point Are Amazing And The Atmosphere Will Be Electric! Athletes Will Then Cross Over The Town Bridge And Descend Down Griffith Street To Dismount In Burgess Park.
The Run In Triathlone Mainly Takes Place Through The Streets Of Athlone And Is Renowned For The Amount Of Spectators And The Atmosphere This Creates. The Run Consists Of 3 Loops Of 7km And A 200m Finish Line Run. Athletes Will Exit T2 In Burgess Park And Head Up The Strand And Across The Town Bridge, And Around By The Castle And Seans Bar And Into The Beer Mile, Where Spectators Have Been Known To Get A Little Excited From All The Beers Consumed From Numerous Hours Spectating. The Runners Then Take A 90 Degree Turn And Head Into The Famous Heartbreak Hill, Which Proves Year On Year To Bring The Best Of Athletes Toa Walk. Runners Then Enter Into The Quiet And Quaint Connuaght Gardens And Through The Memorial Gardens. Heading Left Down Pearse Street Passed St Peters Church Where Athletes Will Then Pass The Wrist Bands Station. Athletes Then Take A 90 Degree Left Turn And Pass The Army Barracks And Along The Banks Of The River Shannon. At This Point Runners Will Pass Bike Course. The Run Take You Under The Iconic White Railway Bridge, Runners Follow The Walls Of The Army Barracks With Two Left Hand Turns And Up The Magazine Road Where Athletes Will Reach Their First Aid Station. The Run Then Passes Into The Clonown Nature Reserve. Athletes Will Then Do An Out And Back Through The Reserve. Heading Back Towards Athlone The Athletes Find Themselves Back In The Electric Atmosphere Of The Beer Mile, Where The Run Follows Around The Castle Over The Town Bridge A Right Hand Turn Brings The Runners Down The Picturesque Strand And River Shannon And Back Into The Run Hotspot In Burgess Park With Pumping Music And Entertainment From Our MC Emma Jenkinson. The.The Turn Point In Burgess Park Marks The End Of The Loop. Athletes Wearing 3 Wrist Bands At This Point Can Follow The Famous Blue Carpet To The Finish Line. Everyone Else Must Enjoy Some More Pain!
* Athletes Must Complete 3 Laps.Wrist Bands That Will Be Colour Coordinated To Each Lap Will Be Given Out To Athletes And It Is The Responsibility Of The Athlete To Collect Them And To Know How Many Laps They Have Completed.
Transition & Athlete Village
The Athlete village, transition area and finish Gantry will all be located in Burgess Park Athlone. The Athletes village will consist of Master events tent that will host Registration, race Briefing, Pasta Party, athlete recovery area and the after race party. The Athletes village will also have a family zone with food court, kids play area and a stage for local arts groups to perform for the kids. A large expo with local and national exhibitors in the sporting & health industry. We will also have an exclusive Athlete recovery area with refreshments and ice baths.We are not only hosting Irelands premier triathlon event we are hosting a festival for the Athletes and the Athletes friends and families. The finishline party will include music, drinks,fire breathers and much much more!
